Sunlight:

All plants need sunlight to grow and produce food. Some grow better in the sun and some don’t need as much sun. plants that are sown to thickly will grow tall and spindly in an effort to get more sun light. where plants such as carrots and beans are planted in rows it is suggested that they are planted North so that the sun can reach the whole plant at some time in the day. This also helps to prevent the spread of disease Known as fungi. plants that like the shade also can grow under a tree or on the east side of a fence or buildings where they will be protected from to much sun.

Staking of climbing plants such as beans and tomatoes allows more leaves to receive more light and produce a better crop. It also allows air to circulate around the crop and reduce the chance of fungal diseases.

The number of hours sunlight each day is also important. It gives the signal for the plants to start flowering. To have plenty of choice blooms ready for flowers to show, some gardeners extend the hours of sunlight by using artificial lighting to force the plants to flower earlier than normal.
